Virulent Excision is a slamming brutal death metal band hailing from "The Windy City" Chicago, Illinois. Comprised of current and/or former members from Asphyxiator(Chicago Brutal Death), Cannibal Abortion(Chicago Brutal Death) and Bad Blood(Chicago Hardcore), Miguel "Goregrinder" Medina(Gutturals), Angel Hernandez(Guitar), Mikey Diaz(Guitar) and Nick Ayala(Drums) team up to form Virulent Excision in late 2018 to unleash brutality not only in the Mid West United States but all over with "Drug-Induced Psychosis" being released worldwide by Brutal Mind out of Indonesia.
The "Drug-Induced Psychosis" five song slaughterfest of an EP is the band's debut outing and it definitely doesn't pull any punches. From blasting insanity to brutal beatdowns complete with bassdrops, this EP for sure leaves me wanting for more than just five songs. The band does plan on having a full length released sometime 2021 with a possible 4-way split before that so hopefully that time flies by.
Miguel's vocals are just straight up guttural. No gurgles, no "breee"s, just low, brutally guttural and flowing with the music behind them. Throw in guest vocals on "Psycoactive Pathogenesis" by Defeated Sanity vocalist Josh Welshman and there's a recipe for annihilation. The twin guitar attack from Angel and Mikey provide a great mix of classic death metal riffage with slamming chug and gallop riffs. Nick's drumming is also great. Awesome stick and footwork again with a great mix of blast beats and fast feet then hits you with the skin terrorizing beatdowns. He also makes good use of the cymbals during fills and accents.
All in all a fantastic debut from the Illinois based quartet. I'm definitely looking forward to a full length in the near future. If I had one nitpick about this release (other than too short) is I would've liked for at least the cymbal work to be a tad louder in the mix and maybe the snare and toms. Kicks sounded good though. That's just my opinion and was just a little nitpick not even a complaint. It also doesn't have anything to do with the dude's talent because he has plenty of that.
"Drug-Induced Psychosis" will be released worldwide by Indonesian record label and online store Brutal Mind digitally on July 6, 2020 with the physical copy and other merch (shirts, hats, patches, etc.) to be released around July 22, 2020. Still time to pre-order some Virulent Excision merch either through the band's bandcamp site or the Brutal Mind site so hurry!
