A pretty solid release by Mourning, a blackened death metal band out of The Garden State of New Jersey. "Mourning the New Dawn" is Mourning's second official release with the "Blinded by Hate" EP being the first in 2005, both of which were released by Texas label Ossuary Industries. Mourning's line-up at the time of recording back in 2011 was Bill Reuter taking on vocal duties, Bill Pope on bass, Jay Prussack on lead and rhythm guitars and Dennis Sanders on drums.
Most of the album consists of a good mix of old school death metal and black metal along with some thrash elements. Vocals are sick and guttural throughout most of the songs with the occasional black metal scream to mix things up a little bit.
Kicking off is the title track "Mourning the New Dawn" heavy with the black metal influence musically but mixing in some thrash elements. Vocals however are pure death metal. Low and guttural with an occasional high backing it. "Eve of Annihilation" kicks in with a fast paced thrashy feel only with the sick guttural vocals. "Dark Autumn" starts off with a slow paced ambient black metal chord progression and chord speed picking with some cool bass lines acting as an accent. Once again just when you think you have a song pegged as a specific genre, Mourning does a 180 right back into some old school style thrash riffs which change throughout the song but each different riff has the thrash feel to it. "Red Rivers of Babylon" starts off pure fast paced black metal including black metal style vocals. Again they change it up to a thrash/old school death feel complete with guitar solo and back to the gutturals. "...Rivers..." ends by once again going back to the black metal feel. "Human Extinction" starts off with a dose of old school death metal leading into a black metal segment instrumentally with some more cool bass action going on in the background then back to the death metal along with another meaty guitar solo. "The Grave I Dug for You" is slow, methodical, sludgy and eerie as hell with guttural vocals and occasionally some high background vocals.
If you're a fan of the blackened death metal type genre, I do suggest to check out Mourning's "Mourning the New Dawn" available at the Ossuary Industries website linked below.
