Another new-to-me band and I am now thoroughly convinced there's something special in the Texas soil. Desecrate the Faith's debut full length album, "Disfigured Arrangement" released by Ossuary Industries on June 23rd, 2014, is yet another example of sheer Texan brutality. This Houston five-piece consists of John Hull taking on the gutturals, Jonathan Bayliss and Tyler Shiery (aka Tyler DTF) on guitar assaults, Coleson Cowden creating thunder on bass and Mike Caputo assaulting the drumkit. Even though Desecrate the Faith is considered "brutal death metal", and they are just that, the band also has a good amount of technical chops around the board, especially evident in track three "Serpent Absolution". I don't think I remember hearing any 5th chords in that entire song. A lot of single string progressions with a mix of off sounding chords and chord progressions but it works. It gives the song an uneasy and eerie feeling in my opinion which is a welcome change. It even has a sweet bass spot about the 2:06 spot. At the same time, the song is heavy as hell. On the opposite side of the spectrum, the opening track "Blasphemous Masturbation" starts off with some chug, trem picking and hammer-on pull-offs in a build up sort of fashion. First accented with only kick drums and cymbal mutes, then throwing in blasts bursts accenting the higher note trem picking before opening it up by cutting the snare hits down to a normal pace while ramping up the double kicks. Very cool opening. They throw in a little slammy chuggieness at various points of the song too to mix things up a bit. Track four "Disfigured Arrangement" is another absolute banger. Classic death metal mixed with intense slammage. Breakdowns within breakdowns within breakdowns before blasting you out of your chair about halfway through the song then back to break-neck mid to fast paced brutality. To bookend this slab of beefy brutal death metal, Desecrate the Faith went with a smashing cover for Abominable Putridity's "Remnants of the Tortured".
The production on "Disfigured Arrangement" is really good in my opinion. All instruments and vocals are at a comparable level with each other so you can hear just about everything. It has a rawness to it which I also like. Not too muddy and not too refined but a good mixture. Cover art for this debut album was done by Roberto Toderico. I really dug this album and can't wait to get my hands on their follow-up from 2017 entitled "Unholy Infestation". Hail Brutal Texas Death Metal!!
